The Alabama Crimson Tide open Southeastern Conference play on Wednesday night and could have one of it’s biggest weapons on the floor, as Buffalo native, and St. Bonaventure transfer Dominick Welch could potentially make his season debut. Welch, who transferred from the Bonnies, has yet to make his Crimson Tide debut while being sidelined with a calf injury.
“Dom was able to get a workout in last night, practiced with the team today,” Head Coach Nate Oats said (via Tuscaloosanews.com). “He’s still dealing with the calf strain so he didn’t go through the full practice today, he went through parts of it to see how he felt. We’re going to see how he feels tomorrow, go through shoot around and then make a determination. If he does play tomorrow it will be on a minute restriction but it’ll be nice to get him back.”
Welch averaged 12.3 points as a senior last year with Bonaventure. A four year starter in Olean, he averaged 10.9 points for his career while shooting 37.4 percent from three.
Alabama would welcome any contribution from Welch, as sophomore guard Nimari Burnett is currently out 6-8 weeks after undergoing wrist surgery. Rochester native Jaden Bradley has replaced Burnett in the starting lineup, and since, has averaged 10.7 points per game and scored a season, and career-high 18 against Gonzaga.
Freshman Noah Clowney is also expected back for Bama after he missed the Tide’s last game vs. Jackson State due to illness. Oats said he was a full go in practice and was not limited.
