With little surprise, University at Buffalo stars Ronaldo Segu and Jeenathan Williams both announced on Monday that they will forgo their extra year of college eligibility, given to them due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and instead turn pro, ending their careers in Buffalo.

Segu announced his decision on his personal Instagram page, and Williams’ decision was reported by Jon Chepkevich of Stats Perform, citing a personal conversation with the 6-5 forward.

It was a long-shot that the two were going to stay at UB and use the extra year, but after the Bulls’ disappointing MAC quarterfinal loss to Akron, some thought they might want to use that extra year for redemption. That will not be the case.

Both players stayed with the program when Nate Oats left for the Alabama job in 2019 and will leave UB after excellent college careers. After helping lead the Bulls to a MAC Championship and NCAA Tournament bid in 2018-19 with Oats, they appeared in one MAC Title game in the remaining three years, losing to Ohio in 2020-21. Segu averaged 14.9 points and was named All-MAC Second Team, while Williams was a First-Team selection, scoring 19.1 points per game.

Chepkevich reports that Williams has accepted a Portsmouth Invitational Tournament invite.

Both players will most certainly make a solid living playing professional basketball. While the NBA may not be in the cards, both have exceptional skills to play at the high professional level. Buffalo will now move onto replacing the two stars, which will not be easy. Fellow senior Josh Mballa has not made an official announcement on his future, but it is also expected that he will not return.
